A friend of mine called the other day from Los Angeles and said she wanted to set up a phone consultation for her dog.  I said “you don’t need to”.  She said “why not?”  I said “because I already know what is going on.”  (Not that I’m that psychic mind you – but as an Animal Communicator I’ve seen this a million times).  I continued “you’re calling me because your dog is depressed.”  She agreed.  “She came to you depressed and fearful and you are depressed at times so the two of you are a great mirror and commiserate when you’re depressed.  When you’re not depressed, you spend the rest of the time feeling sorry for her past.  Therefore, you are falling into what I call default behavior.”  I told her to call me in a few days if she still wanted a session.  

We all fall into default behavior.  We don’t allow the moment to exist.  I explained to my friend that at that point, that dog was lucky.  In fact, it had been lucky for all the years they were together.  It no longer had the sad circumstances it had before and in fact, she had a great life.  The dog had a kid and a cat to look after, my friend loves her – it doesn’t get any better. 

When I saw her in person weeks later I asked about the dog.   She said the switch was overnight.  Once she acknowledged that this was a great life NOW, the dog could enjoy life.

Not everything is that quick, but really it could be.  When we default into certain feelings, we allow the animal to ‘get away’ with certain behavior that is not serving the harmony of the household.  If we continue to feel sorry for someone or stay hurt by something, we are not allowing them to be all that they can be. 

This is not to say that we need to be in denial, it’s the opposite.  By staying in the past feelings, we are actually denying them the present (and who is better than the present than animals?!)  Sometimes you already know the painful circumstances that the entire household is clinging to.  And if you don’t, it’s a good time to call in an Animal Communicator.  But meanwhile, acknowledging the circumstances is important, but also acknowledging how great things are NOW is vital.  They don’t have to stay in feelings.  Feelings are like waves at the ocean, they come and go.  (We all tend to forget the go part.)  Sometimes giving it a date to let it go – like we can all feel badly about this until next Friday is a great way – you all might get bored by Tuesday and be on with the day.

The following are typical examples of things WE ALL DO:

1. Feeling guilty about going out of town or being away all day.

If guilt was measured in dollar amounts and put into a bank account, it could give the Vatican a run for its money.  And there’s no place better than to do this with our animals!!  There are lots of ways around this.  First of all, you have to do what you have to do (as in j.o.b.) in order to afford this dog/cat/bird/goldfish/horse the life of luxury he/she gets to lead.  Secondly, you can say everything with a positive tone.  “I will be home at 4:00 and we get to go on a walk.”  While you are away, replace the guilt with the feeling of looking forward to connecting with your friend.  Believe it or not they pick up on stuff when we are away and what would you rather send, something good or bad?  Make your vacations a vacation for them, they get to eat all that stuff I would never feed you with the housesitter, etc.  It’s fun, all fun, they respond to an uplifted spirit. 

1.  Feeling guilty about adding a baby or another pet to the household.

Life is life.  While your dog/cat/bird/goldfish/horse may have been the baby before and a real live baby is coming into the home, you may want to include them – that you need their help – employ them.  They can always use an extra job.  They can be in charge of the safety or training of the new animal….etc.  By feeling guilty, you are setting up room for them to be resentful and act out.

1. Feeling sad about an animal’s past.

Here’s a big one.  Again, the example at the top is truly how quickly we can help them let it go.  If that doesn’t do it, as I said, let them download with an Animal Communicator.  Sometimes just getting their story “off their chest” so to speak allows freedom.  In addition, having it released from their muscle memory by a canine massage therapist, a cranial sacral practitioner, acupuncture and/or chiropractic, may be the best money spent.  Sometimes bad memories are stored in their bodies and it is our job to help them find the therapy to get it out.  Also the word “rescue” has such a negative, sad, forlorn vibration to it.  If you were to close your eyes and think of the word rescue, it automatically brings up unwanted feelings, quite literally.  So start referring to the day that you adopted your friend as the “lucky day”.  Encourage people that are in the rescue world to start finding other words like “sanctuary”.  Nothing leads to bad behavior faster than the word rescue.  We feel sorry for them and let them get away with things we wouldn’t let a kid do.  There still have to be boundaries.  Chances are good that if you are a caring guardian and are reading a magazine like this to learn to be better, your animal is already on the road to a charmed life.  So just start expressing and enjoying it more!!   But don’t forget boundaries and training.

1. Staying mad about an episode in the past.

This can create the never ending cycle of really bad behavior.  Animals pick up on the pictures words and feelings of their guardians very quickly.  When we hang on to an episode that infuriates us, unfortunately, we are creating a billboard for them to replicate the behavior.  They are not necessarily picking up on our feelings about the event; they just see the instant replay in our mind and think they need to do it again.  If your cat isn’t using the litter box and you’ve run blood work and you’re quite sure the problem is behavioral, rather than to cling to the image, try to sort out what they are ‘pissed off’ about while at the same time, picture them using the litter box.  I know this is difficult but you can’t let your mind slip – not even at work.  Forgive the behavior and send the picture you want.

1. Being fearful of how the animal will behave.

Again, this is billboard material.  And when we get a little panicky about something – i.e. our dog gets leash aggressive and we don’t want to see any of the neighbors, unfortunately, we are setting them up not only in our mind but in our body language and the tone in our voice.  At this point the time and money spent on a good dog trainer is worth its weight in gold.  You can’t afford the fear and must remember, you are in charge – it is your home, in fact at that moment, you need to provide them with security.  Fake it until you make it down the road the first day and then call a dog trainer.

I am not pointing the finger at anyone.  Over the years I have made all of these mistakes with dogs, cats, horses, etc.  What I have found in life is there are no mistakes only lessons.  Our animal companions offer these so graciously!!

Watching the Grand National race has become a favorite past time for millions of enthusiastic fan. The Grand National is the most popular National Hunt racing in the world. It is also one of the most exciting and controversial races due to the high number of injuries and death of the horses while competing in the race. To date, a jockey had died from injuries that was sustained during the race.

The event is a Grade 3 event for horses that are above 6 years old. It is usually conducted on a Saturday, in Liverpool. The circuit requires the horse to jump over a total of 16 fences. Only The Chair and the Water Jump will be jumped over once. The rest of the fences will be jumped over twice. The circuit is dangerous to negotiate because of the severity of some of the fences. It is while jumping over those fences that accidents happen. However, in recent years, due to immense pressure from animal activists, the severity of these fences have been reduced.

The beginnings of the Grand National dated so far back that it was unclear when it actually started. Some argued that the first race took place in 1836, while others insisted that the race started in 1837 or even 1838.

Over the years, the Grand National had produced many spectacular stories. In the 1950s, the National Grand was dominated by a certain Irish by the name of Vincent O’Brien. Vincent was a horse trainer, and he successfully trained horses that won the National Grand in 1953, 1954, and 1955.

Year 1967 was also an interesting time. Rank outsider, Foinavon, managed to came in first at the odds of 100 to 1. It was ridden by Johnny Buckingham. What happened was that two loose horses managed to put off the leading pack. The horses either stopped or refuse to continue, and had to be remounted. Foinavon was so far behind that he managed to avoid the incident altogether, and overtook 17 horses to come in as the winner.

The most famous horse of the Grand National was undoubtedly Red Rum. It is the only horse that won the Grand National three times. It won in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

The Grand National is a rather unpredictable race. From history, all kinds of unexpected or unforseen circumstances can cause even the best horses to lose the race, or the unpopular horses to win the race. Perhaps that’s why millions of people are hooked to the Grand National. Even highly accomplished jockeys like Terry Biddlecombe, Stan Mellor, and Jonjo O’Neill never won the race.

The unexpected twists and turns of the Grand National provide tons of entertainment for its audiences. Even mares (female adult horses) can win this race. To date, a total of 12 mares managed to become a winner. Who would have expected that?

If you are a new dog owner or simply need to give your dog some additional training one of the first things you need to think about as a dog training collar. Back some years ago there weren’t many options, but today there are many different kinds of training collars and, depending on the task at hand, you may need to buy one particular type or many.

All dog training collars and not created alike in some may be more appropriate for the type of training you need to do if your dog. Here’s an overview of some of the different collars available and what they are best suited for.

Martingale collars are best described as a limited to choke collar. These are similar to a choke collar, however they will not constrict smaller than the size of your dog’s neck, therefore will not roughly choke your dog. They do get tight enough so the dog cannot wiggle out of them and are great for agility training. this type of collar is great when you need to call it that you dog cannot wriggle out of but also did not want to worry about your dog accidentally getting choked.

The head collar looks kind of like a horse halter and goes around the dogs face with the leash attachment under the muzzle. Many people mistake this for muzzle but in fact it is not keep you dog from biting but so that you can lead him from the head. When you read your dog bites had his body has to follow and therefore you have good control over getting your dog to go where you want them to go. This type of collar can feel really weird to dog might take awhile to get used to it. Training with the head collar can be tricky since you don’t want to simply lead to your dog around like a pony or he will become dependent on you meeting him and won’t have a mind of its own!

The pronged collar is good for dogs that are very strong and have a muscular neck. This is a good collar to use if your dog is really wild and you have trouble controlling him. The collar has prongs which poke out into the dog’s neck – not sharp prongs, but more like fingers in the applied pressure helps to control the dog. Some people feel that these collars are cruel (they do look kind of mean, but are not as bad as they look) but they can give you an edge until you can get enough training under your belt to be able to control your dog with a regular collar.

The choke chain used to be really popular caller and leash control device but it’s not use too much today. this is basically attain a ghost or rank and when you make on the chain it tightens up on the dog’s throat. they are out of favor today as the type of training you get by using this kind of chain is usually based on punishment in today’s way of thinking is that positive reinforcement is way better way of training your dog. These can also be very dangerous if the chain gets stuck your dog can literally choked to death. If you do use the choke chain you need to make sure you are with your dog at all times and never leave him change out anywhere with a choke chain collar on. the variation to this, the limited choke collar, is made up of a nylon strap and has the ring sewn into a piece of material so that it cannot move as far and could never choke your dog.

Electronic dog collars can be an effective training device if used properly. Personally, I wouldn’t really want to shock my dog but many people do report that these work great and lessen the training time. The way the callers were is the caller has a receiver that can admit a small jolt of electricity. The trainer holds a remote and when your dog starts to exhibit undesirable behavior you press a button on the remote ( or turn a knob) and he gets a jolt. Eventually he learns when he exhibits the undesirable behavior, he’ll get an unpleasant jolt and therefore this discourages him from repeating this type of behavior. The problem is that many people use this as a punishment when in fact it is intended to simply get the dog’s attention. Don’t wait until your dog is barking excessively and then administer the punishment. In order to properly train your dog you need to be observant and see when he is about to bark and then give him the shock to distract him from the barking behavior in the first place.

No bark collars are intended to discourage a dog from barking. they do this by sensing the vibration of the bark and then providing some sort of deterrent. The chart can be one of three things either shock, a noise, or puff of citrus spray. Once you dog associates back to barking with one of these unpleasant occurrences he might think twice before he barks again. While this might work to discourage her dog from barking, you may be better served by figuring out why he’s barking and trying to eliminate the behavior that way.

Choosing a dog training collar as a matter of personal preference and the needs of your dog. When training, always remember that positive reinforcement is better than punishment and in fact punishment rarely works. Be kind to your dog, be persistent and be patient and you’ll soon have a well-trained and obedient companion for life.

Are you setting yourself up for disaster by not taking the following safety precautions when training athletes in the gym?

The weight room in a gym can be a very dangerous place for those more novice athletes entering the weight room for the first time. Often the ego will prevent the young athlete from asking for help and this is not the place you want to learn from experience.

It is up to the coach, trainer or gym staff to promote gym safety and teach athletes how to properly use the equipment.

The best thing to do is to book a one hour session with the gym staff and all of your athletes in the gym and have them go over all the safety issues, common mistakes and how every piece of equipment is used. It will benefit the gym staff and make their job easier in the future.

Rules of the gym should be posted at the entrance of the gym and should be clear for all to read. A photo copy of the rules should placed in the membership packet for people to read on their own.

General rules include:
Replace weights after use
Use a spotter
No food in the gym
No chewing gum
Must wear proper shoes, no sandals allowed!
Bring a towel to wipe down your own sweat
No “horse play”
Drinks must be in a plastic bottle, no cups.
Wear proper attire-no jeans as they can tear the vinyl on the benches

Floor Design:
Designing the outlay of the gym floor requires a lot of knowledge, experience and foresight. There are companies who have consultants that assist and advise new gyms when it comes to what equipment and where to place it in the gym. Restricting factors such as space and financial capital will also affect the way your gym is set-up. The floor space is extremely important as the floor will take a beating when the weights are thrown on the floor. There are several shock-absorbing rubberized materials on the market today.

Free weights will be located in a separate area to the universal machines. This area should contain the bench presses.

Another key point is to have the machines together with regards to the muscle/body parts worked. People will often do leg extensions followed by leg curls or calf raises so group these machines together.

Technique:
All athletes should complete a short course on lifting technique. A 30-60 minute session early on will prevent a lot of injuries and problems in the future. I have seen many mishaps in gyms, which nearly all were preventable.

One such occasion was when I was a teenager and working out in the gym with a friend and his brother. My friend was using the leg press machine and was pushing out the last few reps when he took his legs off the platform prior to turning in the safety handles to prevent the press from coming down on the athlete.

Well, the machine and a lot of weight came down pinning his legs. With neither of us there to spot him during that particular exercise he was trapped. Luckily we were able to push the press back up and there was no damage to his legs. My friend went on to be ranked number one in the world for tennis and he had a great career, however, this may not have happened due to this weight room mishap.

Another common mistake is when athletes are loading and unloading the bar on the bench press. Some unload one side of the bar not realising that the bar will flip up if it becomes unbalanced due to excessive weight on one side.

The key is to have the athletes perform several exercises with only the bar and no weight. Then once good technique has been established, move on to adding some lighter weights. Having the correct technique is of the utmost importance.

I recommend demonstrating and having the athlete perform the following exercises. These are often the most common exercises performed as well as where a lot of the injuries occur.

Bench press
Squat
Dumbbell flyes
Leg press
Military shoulder press

These exercises can also teach the athlete how to spot. The more advanced power lifting exercises can be taught at a later date but require the most supervision and training (eg. Power cleans)

Shoes:
Shoes need to have good traction so as you don’t slip. They need to be comfortable with laces tied up. They also need to support the foot and prevent lateral movement of the foot in the shoe.

Gloves:
Are recommended to prevent blisters and skin damage. They are also beneficial for keeping the hands dry and allowing for a better grip of bars. They also provide extra support.

Clothing:
Non-restrictive
No jewellery
Clanging items
No belts or jeans
Tie shoe laces
No sandals or open-toed shoes
No scarves as they get caught in machines
Remove pens from pockets, phones and other small items

Safety tips:
Use mirrors to assist with technique
The gym should provide for proper ventilation and air conditioning
Must have access to water
Provide small towels
Check machine cables weekly to prevent un-expected breaks
Conduct weekly maintenance checks of all equipment
Keep floor mats clean
No overhead hanging signs
Cover all power outlets
Have a safe distance between equipment
Always have gym staff on duty
Good lighting in all areas of the gym
Lookout for water on the floor around the water fountain

This list could go on indefinitely. As mentioned earlier, the gym is not the place you want to learn from experience. So foresee potential problems and devote a good hour to walking around the gym and looking for these potential problems before they occur.

Some of the dangerous things that I have seen over the years include:
Athletes tripping over the machine cords that were not properly covered
Improper unloading of plates on bars for the bench press causing the bar to tip over.
Athletes slipping on the wet floor near the water fountain
Nuts on the dumbbell not being tight enough and the plates sliding off landing on the lifter
Athletes not using a spotter on the bench press and squat exercises
Athletes falling off the back of the treadmill
Cables snapping during a lift causing injury
Improper technique
Spotters not paying attention or being distracted
Dropping of weights on feet

Any one of these mishaps could bring about serious injury and end an athlete’s career. Some have made these mistakes and have become world famous athletes, some have suffered career ending injuries. Don’t be a casualty!

Working with animals is indeed a pleasure. One thing is for sure though ? Not everyone can work with animals, as you need specialized training. And sometimes, even trained professionals come in harms way!

Domesticating a pet is one thing and actually working with animals is another. In both these cases, you would find there is one uncontrollable factor ? That is the animal?s behavior! Even with the vast development of science and its applications, no sure shot tool to analyze an animal?s behavior has been developed. This makes working with animals a challenging task.

There are many dangers in working with animals, most of whom you cannot see coming. Most such dangers arise from the unpredictability of the animals? behavior. Across a cross-section of animals, you would find that the dangers vary in severity. Find below some dangers enumerated.

* You could be a professional trainer in working with dogs. But you would never be able to anticipate when a dog would go wild and train his canines on you.

* You could well be working with horses for a long time now. Does that mean though that you are able to anticipate each and every move of the horse?

The worst nightmare comes when your animal causes harm to someone else. Now, it could so happen that the animal you are working with does not cause any harm to you. Maybe, you are well trained to avoid any harm coming your way. But your animal could eventually end up harming someone who would be an unsuspecting bystander. In such a scenario, the person has all right to claim monies from the owner of the animal.

Injury claims due to accidents caused by animals normally wave between dog bits and injuries caused by stray livestock. Snake bites are not classified under injury claims, should they bite someone. Other instances where animals could cause harm to human beings can at best be stray events.

What if you go to a zoo and you get harmed by an animal there? Would you be able to claim personal injury money from the zoo authorities? This is a subjective question, but the zoo authorities anyways would have taken precautionary arrangements. They place billboards in front of every enclosure warning visitors to keep safe distance.

This read is to primarily tell you that you can claim money if you get physically hurt by an animal. If you own the animal, you may well look at training the animal better. There is nothing much though that you can do when someone else?s animal runs up against you. The only thing you could pray for is you not getting seriously hurt. Whatever be the case, you still do have the right to claim monies from the animal owner.

A – All-Star. It’s the NHL All-Star Game in Dallas this week. No one watches hockey when it is full of hits, fights and all the fun body contact, so why in the world would people watch it when the players aren’t touching each other?

B – Bush, Reggie. The 88-yard run was as impressive as you expect from this super freak. He sure made it clear that he isn’t yet a mature man, though, didn’t he? Do you think that that front flip into the end zone pissed the Chicago defense off, or was it just a coincidence that those were the last points New Orleans scored?

C – Crosby, Sidney. I know I dwell on this guy, but the Pittsburgh forward will get more attention than anyone else at the NHL All-Star Game. Remember, he’s only 19 years old, so he’s only going to get better than he is, and he’s amazing already. If you haven’t seen him play, do yourself a favor and catch a Penguins game.

D – Drew Brees. This guy can put up huge numbers even when he’s looking pretty average. Seeing he ended up with 354 yards passing was surprising to me. If I was a Saints fan I would be concerned about this game and the four others that the team lost this year when Brees passed for more than 340 yards.

E – Eastern Washington. The Eagles are just 10-10 and are very unlikely to make the tournament. It’s too bad because their star guard, Rodney Stuckey, is as exciting to watch as any player in the country. He leads his conference in points and steals, and is second in assists. If he made the tournament then more people would be able to see how good he is.

F – Floyd Mayweather Sr. Oscar De La Hoya’s trainer wants an unprecedented $2 million payoff or he won’t train the Golden Boy for his next fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. I hope Oscar doesn’t pay him, because I am already sick to death of hearing about how father and son don’t get along.

G – Grossman, Rex. I can’t believe I am defending Grossman, but his performance Sunday was better than the numbers say it was. He protected the ball, he didn’t make a lot of mistakes, he threw it away when he had to, he made big plays like the pass to Berrian, and his team won by 25. The Super Bowl will not be about Rex Grossman – he’ll be fine.

H – Huh? We all know the story – Indy is an offensive team with iffy defense, while Chicago is all about defense with a lousy offense. Points scored per game in the playoffs for the Colts – 25.3. Bears – 33. Points allowed by the Colts – 16. Bears – 19. Everything is upside down.

I – Insurance policy. Colt Brennan had better call his State Farm agent and buy a massive policy on his arm. The Hawaii QB is coming back for his senior season despite being virtually guaranteed of being a first round pick in the draft. That’s great news for bettors – Hawaii will be an attractive bet and an over play again.

J – Jeff Samardzija. The Notre Dame receiver was a likely first round NFL pick, but he decided to give up football and sign with the Chicago Cubs as a pitcher instead. Maybe he can pull a Bo Jackson or a Deion Sanders and play both sports. Or, since he’s now a Cubs’ pitcher, maybe he’ll get recurring arm injuries and fail to live up to his potential.

K – Kurt Thomas. The Phoenix big man’s absence last year was a big reason the Suns didn’t go further in the playoffs. Now Thomas has gone down with an elbow injury and will miss six weeks. So far the team has kept winning, but could this have a serious impact on the unbeatable Suns?

L – Losses. There were some bad losses in college basketball this week. Pitt did not look like a Final Four squad in losing to Marquette. Kansas frustrated their fans, like they are so good at doing, by losing a game that shouldn’t have been close to Texas Tech. LSU was completely and utterly humiliated by Arkansas.

M – Melo. Denver’s superstar comes back from his 15-game suspension on Monday. The difference is that when he left he was the Nuggets’ only superstar, but now he has to share the spotlight with Allen Iverson. His first few games will take some serious handicapping.

N – New York Knicks. It seems very hard to believe, but the Knicks are actually playing some fairly decent basketball. They are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games. Maybe Isiah Thomas isn’t such a terrible coach after all. No, he really is, but this proves that any team can win a few in the pathetic East.

O – Outdoors. Thanks to the Saints, dome teams have now lost the last 10 conference championship games that they have played outdoors. If the weather is that much of a factor to these teams then you really have to wonder why Saints coach Sean Payton had his team practice indoors all week.

P – Peyton Manning. I still can’t stand the guy, but I’m man enough to give a guy respect when he deserves it. Good job. Excellent clutch second half performance. Congratulations. It must be a relief to finally win your first big game in your 30-plus years of life.

Q – Quite useless. I’ve always been curious – what happens to all of the ‘Saints NFC Champion’ and ‘New England AFC Champion’ shirts that obviously didn’t get worn? I think they get shredded up and made into Field Turf.

R – Reche Caldwell. Ugly game for the Patriots receiver who was playing so well in recent weeks. He might want to stay out of Boston for a while because he won’t be too popular there. He made several mistakes, none as costly as dropping the pass that was right on his hands when the nearest defender was about 100 miles away.

S – Serena Williams. It’s been a long time since you have been able to get value betting on a Williams sister, but Serena’s surprisingly solid performance in Australia this week is turning some heads and fattening some wallets.

T – Two halves. I put this here in case Bill Belichick reads this. Bill – football games have two halves. You win more if you make your game show up for both of them. I thought you were a genius coach. What happened?

U – Utley, Chase. The Philadelphia Phillies’ second baseman signed a 7 year, $85 million contract, meaning that the infield, except for third base, should look the same (Howard, Rollins, Utley) for a long time. Now if only the Phillies could find a way to quit sucking. They were a terrible team to bet on, especially at home.

V – Vick, Michael. It sounds like Vick is going to be exonerated over water-bottle-gate, but it’s still stunning that a guy like him gets into as much trouble as he does. If I was new Falcons coach Bobby Petrino, I don’t think I’d be too sad if Vick found a new home. The Raiders would be a good fit – he could relate intellectually with the morons in the ridiculous costumes.

W – Wild run. It might be a bit early for you to get excited about the Kentucky Derby, but you might want to remember the name Tiago. The horse is the brother of Giacomo, the 2005 Derby winner, and he won a wild and crazy but impressive race Sunday at Santa Anita. He is incredibly raw, but he sure looks talented.

X – Xavier. Two games for the Musketeers this week. A push in a six-point win against UMass, and an ugly loss as favorites at St. Joseph’s. Rough week. The saving grace is that they are in the midst of a nice streak of five overs in six games.

Y – Youth movement. Hiring 35-year-old coach Eric Mangini worked out well for the Jets this year, so now young coaches are cool in the NFL. Mike Tomlin, the new Steelers’ boss is 34. The Raiders offered their job to a 32-year-old (he wisely declined). Soon, the head coaches will be younger than the rookies.

Z – Zero. The number of touchdowns I would have guessed that linemen would score in the AFC championship. I would have missed it by three. Bizarre.
