The famous Spanish Riding School is accepting women.  Finally.

The article I found today states, “…the first women to be accepted to Vienna’s elite, internationally renowned and hitherto male-dominated Spanish Riding School – a 481-year-old institution as famous and peculiar to this Alpine nation as Mozart…”

The article goes on to describe what it took for the first 2 women to be accepted into the prestigious Spanish Riding School, and how the School, steeped in tradition, has only recently come out of its conservatism ideals.

The reason behind this male dominated School coming into the 21st century can be traced to the general director, appointed in early 2007.  A woman, a Viennese society hostess, was entrusted with modernizing the school and making it more open.

Bringing it into modern age, and, as one male counterpart put it, “…we are not living in the Middle Ages any more.”
